Celebrating Women's History Month

March 13, 2022

If you are scrolling through any channel on social media, you know that Women's History Month is this month. I love the purpose of Women's History Month.   It celebrates women's contributions to history, culture, and society. It has been observed annually in March in the United States since 1987.

The 2022 Women's History Month theme is "Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope." It is a dedicated month to reflect on the often-overlooked contributions of innovative and brave women in the history of the United States. As a disabled African American woman, I have so many sheroes (women regarded as heroes) who have done amazing things to build and strengthen my community.

But I also believe that Women's History Month should be focused on those women in your personal history who have made an impact on your life. For example, becoming a woman with a disability was traumatizing for me. I did not understand that life could go on despite my inability to use my legs. Thank God there were women in my personal and professional life who helped guide me.

Of course, I must begin reflecting on the women in my life by recognizing my mother and mother-in-law. They are both Christian women who helped me see that brokenness and failure are necessary for every great work of God. I constantly thank God for them. And I have so many aunts, cousins, my sister, my sisters-in-law, and sister-friends who continue to show me love and support.

These are women who may not be in the history books, but their love and encouragement inspired me to create Disability Partnerships. If it were not for the women in my life, I would still wonder if my life had any meaning.   They mentally and emotionally helped me build programs that support thousands of people with disabilities.   I do not say this lightly.

So, celebrate women in history. Please. Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks, Marian Edelman Wright, and others should be honored. But do not forget those women who constitute your own personal life history.

Please do something this month to recognize Women's History Month. Volunteer, Support, Donate or Engage with a women-owned nonprofit or small business.   We need your support.

Let me know what you think about Women's History Month and honoring your personal sheroes. We would love to hear from you. Email me at tmgallman@disabilitypartnerships.org.
