Affordable Accessible Housing
We help people with disabilities find resources and information on affordable accessible homes and assist with essential home modifications.
Because home should work for you—not against you
More than 1 in 4 U.S. adults—over 70 million people—live with a disability, and too many face homes that don’t meet basic accessibility needs or budgets. CDC
The reality today
Accessibility is rare: Fewer than 5% of U.S. homes are accessible to people with mobility disabilities. equalrightscenter.org
Costs are crushing: 60% of renter households led by a person with a disability are cost-burdened (spending >30% of income on housing). For renters under 25 with disabilities, two-thirds are cost-burdened. Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies
Affordable supply is short: The U.S. has a shortage of 7.1 million rental homes affordable and available to extremely low-income renters—the income bracket where many disabled renters fall. National Low Income Housing Coalition+1
Affordability pressures are rising: High rents and borrowing costs have pushed cost burdens to record levels nationwide. Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies+1
Bottom line: accessible, affordable housing is both a health and economic issue. When homes fit our bodies and budgets, independence and well-being rise.
How Disability Partnerships is taking action (2025–2027)
Our aspirational goals include developing, partner-driven solutions that make housing more accessible and affordable. We want to:
Build local coalitions for accessible homes with nonprofits, builders, and city partners; co-design “warm handoffs” from hospitals/rehab into housing and community supports.
Open doors to financing by connecting individuals to housing lenders and financial education tailored to accessibility upgrades and homeownership.
Work with property managers to adopt accessibility features and fair-housing best practices; share simple retrofit playbooks.
Engage rehab engineers to advise on cost-effective modifications and safety.
Partner with home-building nonprofits (e.g., Habitat) to prioritize wheelchair-accessible layouts and step-free entries in new builds.
Launch an awareness & referral campaign that connects people with disabilities to credible housing and benefits resources—no wrong door.
NEW: Adaptive Equipment Grant (2025)
Small grants. Big independence.

This grant will support the purchase of adaptive equipment to meet the needs of individuals. We aim to improve accessibility, promote inclusive disability culture, and ensure everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
What we fund (examples): portable ramps, shower chairs and transfer benches, grab bars and installation, hand-held shower systems, offset hinges for widened doorways, smart-home devices for safety/independence, reachers, bed rails, and other clinically recommended items.
Who can apply:
